This month Women Writing for (a) Change-Bloomington poets are participating in National Poetry Writing Month. Every day we will offer up a new poem by a writer in our community. Check back after 6:00pm for the Prompt of the Day and the selected resulting poem.
Day 6 Write a poem of the possible, focusing squarely not on what has happened, or what will happen, but on what might happen if the conditions are right. Write a poem that emphasizes the power of “if,” of the woulds and coulds and shoulds of the world.
Poem of Possibility by Amy Lifton
If my fingers could fly over the strings,
no arthritis to diminish their flexibility,
if my eyes could instantly accommodate the different
distances to the music stand and the strings, or
my brain could easily memorize the music so I
wouldn’t have to look at back and forth and
could lose myself in my hands as they played,
if my heart could let go of the fear of failure and
could instead flow feelingly through free fingers,
if my spirit would open to allow the resonance of
the instrument to ripple up my spine and out my head
filling me with glory, then I would begin to do justice
to the harp!
